“Who Moved My Cheese?” Book Review
If you are anything like me, and have allowed life to just take over, then you probably don’t have much free time. There are lots of things that I would love to do or get done, but reading was never top of the list. Though I have always been an avid reader, I just can’t seem to find the time for it anymore. To my surprise, I was diagnosed with have uterine fibroids in January of 2023, and was scheduled for surgery on February 22, 2023. Be sure sure ready about my journey and my Myomectomy Surgery. With this surgery, the estimated recovery time was approximately 3 weeks, which would allow some free time, that I would just be healing and recovering. So, guess what I did? I grabbed a good read to keep my company.
The book I chose was: “WHO MOVED MY CHEESE?”, “An Amazing Way To Deal With Change In Your Work and In Your Life”, by Spencer Johnson, M.D., foreword by Kenneth Blanchard, Ph.D.
This book is definitely a good read! It was gifted to me by a friend who thought I could use a bit of encouragement, and also some redirection. I was actually going through some things in the workplace with my current position, so he introduced this book right on time! (You can read about my time at Lasership in this post) Now, don’t get it twisted, it is not a big book, with lots of pages. In fact, it is a small book with only about 100 pages, which is just a quick read. But it was definitely a GREAT read and real eye opener!
Initially expecting this little Gem to be just another vague, general self-help book. But it was much more than that. The attitudes adopted in the book by the 4 characters depicts the different types of people we have around us in life and also in the workplace.
- Some who are afraid of change
- Some who maybe be open to change
- Some who anticipate change
- Some of keep change at the forefront
All of us in the “Rat Race” act, behave, and perform just like one of the 4 characters mentioned. This book reminds us that our state of mind and beliefs are what is holding us back or propelling us forward. Getting control over the way you think can greatly help you on the road to riches and breaking out of the rat race.
About Who Moved My Cheese:
At initial opening, I had no idea what to expect from this little book. I cracked it open with an open mind and no expectations. Though, my friend had introduced the book to me, I still had no idea what to expect from this book. Initially, I was thinking that this book was just a short story about some mice looking for cheese. But little did I know that this book was a thought provoking, well thought out, Gem.
Diving right in, I read the first few pages and didn’t want to put it down. It was a easy read, full of insightful, thought-provoking ideas that will have you questioning yourself and evaluating your own situation. I had no idea this little short read would hold so much. I had no idea what was in store for me. Getting further into the book, I noticed how the little side notes (written on the cheese, by the character Haw) made me really think about where I was going wrong. As he moved along his path he was able to reflect, reminscence, plan ahead, see more clearly, reach another milestone day by day and which ultimately changed his entire outlook and attitude. The book is so relatable, and forces us to be 100% honest with ourselves.
Pros:
- Easy Read
- Relatable
- Thought Provoking
- Change Promoting
- Also Available for Teens and Adolescents
- Can apply the thought process to life and work
Cons:
- I didn’t want to stop reading
- Short Book
This book really had me contemplating the following questions 11 questions about my life:
- Where had I gone wrong?
- Where I could have made a different turn or different move?
- Where my cheese had been moved to?
- Why I had not noticed the changes taking place?
- Which character in the book I really was?
- Where I go from here?
- Am I the character who is complacent and stays stagnant?
- Am I the character who sees the change kinda late, but still has time to make the changes necessary to live the life i want to live?
- What is my cheese?
- Do I need a new path?
- Did I just need a new plan on the current path I am on?
This book really got the wheels turning, and my ideas flowing. reevaluating my own situation and what had not been working for me. Really figuring out what path I wanted to take and where I would eventually end up.
The way the author worded and put this book together really helped you to see what holds we actually have on us – holding us back. This little short story of book definitely had a way with words and a way of making you be open and honest with yourself. If you pay attention, and apply what is being said in the short story, you will notice how this book can fit right into your life and make you think about yourself in terms of the characters in the book.
“Savor the adventure, move with the cheese”
~Haw
Even the quotes that are written on the cheese to help one the characters remember how far he has come were thought provoking and so helpful. This was also a helpful tip to keep in mind when you are on your own journey. In other words, celebrate the little steps you take on your way to your cheese.
PRODUCT REVIEW QUEEN’S RATING:
In conclusion, I am so happy my friend gifted me this book, and I would like to do the same for you. You can grab your copy of the book here, via my link! I cannot stop thinking about how I can manage and move with my cheese in the workplace. Having this book gave me some real good thought-provoking life questions. The book forced me to re-evaluate myself and my own situation to see what is or isn’t working for. Being in this maze and inthe rat race only lends to the author’s point that if you do not move with the cheese, then you can definitely expect to get left behind. Businesses, structures, policies, and the like are always changing within a business; so you don’t want to get passed over for not anticipating change and acting accordingly.
I promise you will not be disappointed!
I would to discuss what you thought about this fantastic book as well. Be sure to leave me a comment and let me know what you think about it.
