SELLING ONLINE: 14 LESSONS
If you don’t know, selling online can be pretty tough, especially if you don’t know what you are doing. I have been selling online off and on since 2014, and I fell in love with it since day 1. I’ll share with you later, exactly how I got started and what has driven me to keep going (stay tuned for that post later on). I will sell anything under the sun to anybody under the moon, for a decent price- online.
I am a self-taught, mistake making, online-selling machine who plans to someday make a living solely online from anywhere in the world. Selling online is one of most favorite past times. Today I will tell you about 15 lessons I have learned while selling online. I will also give you a few tips that could help you to avoid the same pitfalls that I fell into.
SELLING ONLINE: 14 THINGS I’VE LEARNED
- PEOPLE WILL BUY ANYTHING: One thing I have learned is that people will buy absolutely anything. Ever heard the saying “One man’s trash, is another Man’s treasure”? I’ve sold items with holes, armpit stains, cracks, scrapes, tears, etc…
- TREAT YOUR ONLINE DEALINGS LIKE A BUSINESS: When dealing online, it is very important to treat every transaction like a business transaction.
- LOTS OF FREE PLATFORMS TO SELL ON: With so many options at our fingertips, it’s so easy to get started making money online. With options like, YouTube, Shopify, Amazon, Ebay, Etsy, Poshmark, etc… it is now easier than ever to make money online.
- MARKETING IS EVERYTHING: Getting your items in front of the right audience is the key to making you money online. The way in which you market your items will determine the amount of traffic and sales you make. So, make sure you have a strategy for marketing your products, unless you are using a big-name platform that does all the marketing for you! (ie: Amazon, Ebay)
- PATIENCE IS KEY: Being patient requires a lot of determination and focus. Just remember that nothing great occurs overnight.
- MISTAKES WILL BE MADE: Allowing yourself room for mistakes is all a part of the process. Without making mistakes, you cannot master your craft. The mistakes are only much needed lessons.
- YOU GET OUT EXACTLY WHAT YOU PUT IN: “Nothing comes to a sleeper but a dream.” If you don’t put in the work, you will not see the results you are hoping for. Simple as that!
- BEWARE, SCAMMERS ARE EVERWHERE: From the little things to the bigger pricier items, scammers are always looking to get over on people. It’s no different in the online world of selling. People are always on the hunt for the next best deal, no matter what it takes to acquire it. Always be on your P’s and Q’s because if there is a loophole, or a way to get over, they will find it!
- PEOPLE WILL BUY ANYTHING: Holes, stains, rips, tears, chipped, non-functioning and even broken; people will buy anything. My motto is: “EVERYTHING SELLS ONLINE” – no matter what is is, somebody, somewhere needs it.
- ALWAYS READ THE FINE PRINT: Always read before you sign. Don’t sign up for something you don’t want, or an unwanted headache down the road. Know what you are getting before you agree to receive it.
- NO EDUCATION OR TRAINING IS NEEDED: Start from where you are in life right now, with no additional paid trainings, courses, seminars, webinars, classes, etc… All it takes is some research and a willingness to do whatever it takes to succeed.
- ALWAYS CELEBRATE THE POSITIVES: Celebrating the smaller victories gives you something to look forward to, and also highlights the bigger victories. Giving you something to work towards– remember, you got to crawl before you walk!
- THERE WILL BE LOSSES: How you handle the losses is what sets you apart. When you fall down or mess up (and it will happen), you must ALWAYS get back up and keep going.
- HARD WORK PAYS OFF: Nothing comes to a sleeper, but a dream (insert proper quote here). Well that saying (or whatever the proper saying is) reigns true for many situations in life, including selling stuff online. You cannot build a solid, withstanding business without the hard-work and sheer dedication to what you are trying to accomplish.
All in all, selling online can be brutal without the necessary tools that are required to make the business work. Even though it may be difficult, you can still make it work if you are determined. I have been selling online for a few years now on and off, but I always return to it because I know it’s real, and I know it works. I hope you found my list helpful; and I hope that you can take some of my lessons in account before making the same ones yourself.
