I Need A Recession Proof Business
We could begin this year with resolutions that I probably will not stick to. I could also make some empty plans to start a new diet, that I will end up abandoning. Or I could probably fool myself into thinking that this is the right time to adopt some other new habit that I might not keep up. There are so many things that we tell ourselves we need change and because a new year is upon us. We often fool ourselves into thinking it must be done now. But this year, I am making it my business to change that. What I need is a Recession Proof Business!!!
It’s 3am in the morning, and I cannot sleep. I went to bed around 10-ish and now I’m up again! Not only did I not get enough sleep, but of course my mind was running nonstop. Thinking about everything from paying bills, possibly losing my contract at work, moving into a bigger space, looking for additional work, finding a recession proof business, working on my blog, etc,…. You name it, I was thinking it.
Thinking I already knew what I wanted to do with myself, but boy was I wrong. I thought I wanted to sell clothes online because I consider myself a fashionista and that is what I love. Yes, I love to shop; for everything and anything under the sun; be-it bathroom tissue, or home decor. But I also love to sell. I get such a joy making sales online. So, I thought what better than to create a business from something that I absolutely enjoy and can see myself doing for the rest of my life. I thought that I could create the life I want with selling fashion and never have to worry again. I thought I was doing myself a favor, but in fact I’m actually doing myself a disservice. I had to be honest with myself. I had to do some evaluating, and then some re-evaluating. I had to decide if this business would make it through a recession.
I know that I have always wanted to be an Entrepreneur since finishing High School, but had no idea where my big break would come from. I have working since age 13 or 14, and cannot remember a time when I absolutely did not NEED a job. So, it was out of the question for me. But I have always known that it wasn’t for me. I knew that I was destined for something better and much greater. After being in the workforce now for more than 20 years; I can honestly say that I still feel just as strongly as I did then about not working for anybody. The only problem is that I had and still don’t have any idea what my calling is.
The reason why I wanted so bad to work for myself is because I want ‘Freedom of Time”.
Time to LIVE my life – To create the life I see for myself.
Time to ENJOY – To enjoy some of the things that I actually like to do (like selling online).
Time with FAMILY – To enjoy the years I have left before all of my kids leave home.
Time for VACATIONS – Something I have never had the luxury of doing.
Just thinking about my life and how much I am working just to make ends meet, makes me cringe. I don’t like it, and most importantly; I am missing out on my son’s upbringing. I owe him so much more than I am able to give him right now, and I feel so guilty for it. I know I have to do something. I know that some changes need to be made for his sake, if nothing else. But not just do something, but something BIG! I need a business that allows me to be mother, that pays the bills, and also allows the flexibility to live the lifestyle I want and deserve.
I need a RECESSION PROOF BUSINESS! I cannot just form any business because of my love or passion for something. The business has to be well thought out, well researched, and a well planned business that can sustain harsh conditions in the economy. The business also needs to be something that I enjoy or can learn to enjoy for the sake of my future. It has to be something that I can see myself doing until I die, because it won’t be work, but a way of life or a lifestyle.
Since I was up and not sleepy at all, I decided to do some research. The first thing on my list was to find out which industries have Recession Resistant businesses. And next I would need to narrow the list down to pinpoint exactly what I can be prosperous and productive in. Here is the list: (from my google search)
12 Businesses That Do Well In A Recession:
- Groceries: People always need groceries to survive
- Healthcare: Access to healthcare is essential to a healthy life
- Candy: This one surprised me because people turn to comforts during struggles
- Alcoholic Beverages: People always turn to booze in good and bad times
- Discount Retailers: Standing out with cheaper prices will always win!
- Childrens Goods: People are always having children
- Pet Industry: Folks spend tons of money on furry family members
- Financial Advisors & Accountants: People are always looking for ways to save and atleast keep what they already have
- Cyber Security & Tech Support: Keeps important things and processes up and running
- Repairs: Things are always needing repair
- Debt Collection: This one surprised me as well
- Freight Operations: Because the economy has to keep moving forward
After reviewing the list, and being totally honest with myself about where I am, and where I am going. I knew I had to narrow it down to just one option. I knew also, that I needed to be real specific, and precise about what I want, and how I want to get it.
I actually expected the list to contain two other options, which were not even listed. One of them being Services for the Elderly. Just like the children’s option, have a business that caters to the baby boomers, I thought could be just as beneficial. The other option I thought would have been listed is the Sex Industry. People always turn to sexual desires, and needs in hard times. So, I definitely thought it would have made the list.
Anywho, I had some serious thinking to do. I really needed to decide which direction I wanted to go in. Trying to decide which recession proof business option was going to work best for me, in my life, and my current situation. I had to consider what it would take to get a business off the ground. I also needed to consider the money it would require, the time, and also the resources, and support that may need to go into building a recession proof business from the ground up, with the proper foundation. This is definitely not an overnight decision. It obviously requires tons of research, decision making, and thought.
In Conclusion, with every year, it’s time to re-evaluate yourself and your situation to see what is working and what isn’t. You have to figure out where you are going and if it aligns with your goals and aspirations of where you want to be. If you would like to know which option I chose. Be sure sure to stay tuned for more to come. If you would like to talk about it with me, be sure to leave me a commment!
